Practice

Thinking through
making.

R. J. Hurst is a Naarm / Melbourne-based interdisciplinary visual artist and developing artist-researcher working across painting, sculpture, assemblage, wearable art and light-responsive installation.

I explore how images and materials shape experiences of attraction, uncertainty and recognition. Some works emerge from research into gender, cultural history and representation; others develop through experiments with light, colour, texture and spatial distortion.

Painting, sculptural assemblage, reconstructed textiles and layered surfaces allow me to question what becomes visible and what remains concealed. My landscape paintings consider ecological relationships and the experience of Place through materially expressive processes.

I am interested in public exhibitions where people encounter these works within everyday spaces, bringing their own memories and perspectives rather than receiving a prescribed interpretation.
